Happy St Patrick's day. This blog is officially a no-snake zone.

(It should also be a no-pint-shaped-hat zone, but sadly I can't guarantee that)

Interesting piece on OpenDemocracy about how things are playing out at home, and how these folks could offer us all a genuine chance at progress...

On other things Irish, it turns out that nice article by Paul Muldoon's wife I mentioned the other day was in the Times, not the Post.

Midlife crisis? Could this be your ideal job?

(Thanks, appropriately enough today, to the Irish Eagle)

Now, although I agree with HL Mencken, that no-one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American public, I know deep down I could never be an modern age entrepreneur.

Because whenever I would have a brilliant, brilliant money-making idea like this, I would just be too damned embarrassed to tell anyone about it.

According to the AP, the price of aquatic spirits seems very reasonable:

AP 1 ZIMBABWE Mermaid
WOMAN PAID FOR INVISIBLE MERMAIDS TO BE FLOWN FROM BRITAIN

A businesswoman paid £2,500 to fly five invisible mermaids from London to Harare to help her recover a stolen car and cash.
Magrate Mapfumo told a court in the Zimbabwe capital she paid the cash to fly the mermaids to Harare on the advice of musician Edna Chizema, who is on trial for theft by false pretences.
Zimbabwe’s Shona people believe mermaids are fearsome enchantresses capable of wreaking vengeance on wrongdoers.
Mapfumo testified that she sought Chizema’s advice after her car and thousands pounds were stolen.
She said she also paid for the mermaids to be housed at Harare’s plush Jameson Hotel, and supplied them with mobile phones and electrical generators to cope with the city’s numerous power cuts, the paper said.
‘‘I asked about the names of the mermaids and I was told they were called Emma, Charmaine, Sharvine, Bella and a fifth one who was said to be an Arab mermaid,’’ Mapfumo told the court.
‘‘All the time, she (Chizema) told me I could not see the mermaids as only spirit mediums could do so.’’

One of the first news editors I worked with when I joined the paper died over the weekend. David Jones was instrumental in the move from hard copy to computerisation, and was one of the pioneers in that area in British newspapers.

Back this afternoon after the hurly-burly of the fascinating Politics Online conference (where in a perfect post-modern moment I found I didn't have time to blog, since it would entail the effort of going to the local Kinkos..)

Another partner-in-crime is on a book tour at the moment.

Nice piece in the Post yesterday about Craig Ferguson. I had completely forgotten about his brilliantly named alter-ego in a previous life. In a similar vein, Alex Witchel in the Times does a nice profile of Lewis Black.

Also in the Post was a really lovely article by Paul Muldoon's wife about him - I can't seem to track it down on the site, but when I do I'll link to it. Which tangetially leads me on to ...

A signed print of RJ Matson's terrific drawing of WZ for the tribute album can now be bought from his website.
